Non-Standard CNC Machines, Engineered From Your Part

When a part sits just outside a standard machine, the answer is usually a configuration change rather than a different process. Here is what can be changed — and what cannot.

    3-motorW/X/Z drive for thick plate
    C-axisLifting for special forming
    25 axesConcurrent servo linkage
    48 hGlobal on-site response

What can actually be customised on a CNC sheet metal machine?

Most parts that fall outside a standard machine fall outside it by a small margin — slightly too thick, slightly too small, an awkward lift, an unusual bend sequence. In those cases a configuration change solves the problem far more cheaply than a different process. STON CNC customises in six defined areas: heavy-duty drives (a separate W-axis motor, or a three-motor W/X/Z arrangement with a thickened frame for thick-plate bending), C-axis lifting for special forming processes, upper and lower auxiliary blades with customised length for local small-scale bending, small-part configurations with modified clamping for micro components, automatic tool change for multi-variety processing, and customised feeding including special clamping methods, magnetic grippers and vacuum arrangements.

Because casting, heat treatment, machining, welding, assembly and inspection all happen inside our own 20,000㎡ factory, a structural change does not become a subcontracting negotiation. What we will not do is quietly exceed a structural or safety limit to win an order — if a part needs a press brake or a different process entirely, we say so at drawing review.

STON CNC (Qingdao Ston Mechanical Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese original manufacturer of CNC panel benders and turret punch presses, founded in 2006 in Qingdao, China. All equipment described here is built inside STON CNC's own 20,000㎡ factory, from casting and heat treatment through machining, assembly and inspection. Machines carry ISO 9001 quality certification and CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and are exported to more than 80 countries. View certifications and patents →

    What can be changed

    Eight areas we customise

These are the modifications we engineer regularly, each driven by a specific class of part problem rather than by a catalogue of options.

    Three-motor W/X/Z driveThick-plate bending, reinforced frame
Separate W-axis motorExtra forming power, lighter change
    C-axis liftingSpecial lift-and-form sequences
Auxiliary bladesUpper, lower or both, length customised
Small-part configurationModified clamping for micro components
Changement d'outil automatiqueMulti-variety processing without setup
Custom feeding and grippersClamping methods, magnetic and vacuum
Custom knivesPressing and folding knives from your drawings
When customisation is the right answer

Three situations where a configuration change beats a different machine

    01

The part is marginally outside the standard window

A cold-rolled part at the top of the range, or a bend that needs more force than the standard drive delivers comfortably. A separate W-axis motor or a three-motor W/X/Z arrangement with a thickened, more stable machine body addresses this directly — a structural upgrade rather than a workaround, and far cheaper than adding a second process.

    02

The geometry needs a motion the standard machine does not make

Some parts require the workpiece to be lifted during forming, or a short local bend partway along an edge that a full-length blade cannot produce. C-axis lifting and customised-length auxiliary blades exist for exactly these cases, and they are engineered from the part drawing rather than selected from a list.

    03

The part cannot be held the standard way

Very small components, unusually flexible blanks, parts with no flat gripping area, or surfaces that cannot tolerate vacuum marks. Customised feeding — special clamping methods, C-axis lifting, magnetic grippers, suction cup arrangements — is where most of our engineering time on a custom project actually goes.

    Recommended configuration

    Three levels of customisation

Most requests are resolved at the first level. Working through them in order is what keeps a custom machine affordable and its delivery predictable.

    Tooling customisation

    The cheapest and fastest option
    • Custom pressing and folding knives from your drawings
    • Upper and lower auxiliary blades, length customised
    • 42CrMo forged tooling for long service life
    • Automatic tool assembly tooling where required
    • No structural change to the machine
    • Shortest lead time of any customisation
    Most custom projects

    Configuration customisation

    Standard platform, modified capability
    • Separate W-axis motor or three-motor W/X/Z drive
    • Thickened and reinforced machine body to match
    • C-axis lifting for special forming sequences
    • Automatic tool change for multi-variety processing
    • Customised feeding, clamping and magnetic grippers
    • Control system brand specified to your service network

    Line and integration engineering

Built around your factory, not a catalogue
    • Overall planning from product structure, capacity and site layout
    • Integration with equipment you already own
    • Unified control across the line with process interlock
    • Intelligent scheduling and data traceability
    • Interfaces to your existing robots and handling systems
    • Factory acceptance testing before shipment

    What we will not customise

Every machine builder has limits. Ours are published here because a customer discovering them after an order is worse for both sides than a difficult conversation before one.

    Right fit

Parts that sit close to a standard machine's window and are blocked by a specific, identifiable constraint — forming force, lift geometry, blade length, gripping method or tool change. These are engineering problems with engineering answers.

    Wrong fit

Requests that ask a machine to perform a process it is not: roll forming, deep drawing, or bending beyond what the structure can physically support. No configuration option changes what a process fundamentally does.

    Keep a press brake

Where a part genuinely needs a press brake, we quote a press brake. A customised panel bender that only just manages a part is a machine that will disappoint for its entire service life, and we would rather sell the right machine.

Standards this equipment is built and guarded to

Risk assessment follows EN ISO 12100; safety-related control functions such as light-curtain interruption and emergency stop are specified to EN ISO 13849-1. Hydraulic press brakes supplied into the EU are built against EN 12622. Machines placed on the EU market carry CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC with the accompanying technical file. Quality management is certified to ISO 9001, and machined structural tolerances follow ISO 2768. Custom configurations do not sit outside the compliance framework. Risk assessment to EN ISO 12100 is repeated for the modified machine, safety-related control functions are specified to EN ISO 13849-1, and CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC covers the machine as delivered rather than the standard platform it was derived from.

On the machines this means fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on all protruding moving parts, laser guarding that halts motion when the protected zone is broken, over-tonnage protection on turret punch presses, and grating-ruler offset-load detection on panel benders.

    Choosing the process

Customise, buy standard, or change the part?

Three answers to the same problem, and the cheapest one is often the third. We work through all three before quoting a custom machine.

     Custom configurationStandard machineRedesign the part
    CostModerate premiumLowestOften zero
Délai d'exécutionLonger — engineering plus buildStandardDepends on your approval cycle

RiskSpecification must be right first timeLowRequires design authority
What we recommend firstCheck whether a small part change removes the constraint — it frequently does, and it costs nothing

A surprising share of custom enquiries are resolved by a two-millimetre change to a flange or a corner relief on the customer's drawing. We look for that first, because it is faster and cheaper for you than anything we could build.

    Process flow

How a custom project actually runs

    6. Install and trainCommissioning, operator training, handover
    What changes

Standard machine with a workaround versus an engineered configuration

Figures below describe the direction and mechanism of the change. Actual results depend on your part mix, batch size and shift pattern — we model them against your own drawings before quoting.

    ItemStandard machine, worked aroundEngineered configuration
Forming force at the limitMachine runs permanently near capacityDrive and frame sized for the part

Operator workaroundsManual intervention becomes routineDesigned into the process

Payback logic we use with customers: (annual labour released + reduction in rework and scrap + additional saleable output) ÷ installed equipment cost. We build this with your real numbers rather than publishing a headline figure that would not match your plant.

Questions we get about custom projects

    Frequently asked questions

Can you make a panel bender that handles thicker material than the standard rating?
Within engineered limits, yes. A separate W-axis motor or a three-motor W/X/Z drive with a correspondingly thickened and reinforced machine body is a genuine structural upgrade for thick-plate work. What we will not do is raise a published rating by reprogramming a standard machine — forming force is a structural property, and a machine running permanently at its limit produces accelerated wear, drifting accuracy and disappointed customers.
What is C-axis lifting and when is it needed?
It is a customised feeding configuration that lifts the workpiece during the forming sequence, used where the part geometry requires the blank to be raised rather than held flat — certain deep or stepped profiles, and parts where a standard clamping path would collide with an already-formed feature. It is specified from the part drawing during pre-sales analysis rather than offered as a generic option.
Our parts are very small. Can a panel bender handle them?
The standard minimum four-sided inner dimension is approximately 140 × 190 mm on a panel bender and 200 × 200 mm on a folding machine. Below that, a small-part customisation with modified clamping and dedicated tooling is possible, and we have engineered these for micro-component work. Send the smallest part first — it usually determines whether the family fits a standard machine, a custom configuration, or a press brake.
How long does a custom machine take compared with a standard one?
Longer, because engineering, tooling design and factory acceptance testing are added ahead of the build. The predictable part is that casting, heat treatment, machining, welding, assembly and inspection all happen in our own factory, so a structural change does not depend on a subcontractor's queue. A project timeline is issued with the engineering proposal.
What does a custom configuration cost compared with standard?
It depends entirely on which level of customisation is needed, and the levels differ substantially. Tooling customisation — custom knives and auxiliary blades — is a modest addition to a standard machine. Configuration customisation such as a three-motor drive, C-axis lifting or automatic tool change carries a meaningful premium because the structure and controls change with it. Line-level engineering is scoped as a project rather than a machine. Before quoting any of them we check whether a small change to your part removes the constraint, because that costs nothing. Send the part that does not fit and we return an engineering assessment within 24 hours.
Will a custom machine still be CE marked?
Yes. Risk assessment to EN ISO 12100 is repeated for the modified configuration, safety-related control functions are specified to EN ISO 13849-1, and the CE declaration under Directive 2006/42/EC covers the machine as delivered rather than the standard platform it derives from. Guarding is designed around the actual modification, which matters particularly where custom feeding changes the access pattern.
Can you integrate with machines and robots we already have?
Yes. Every STON panel bender keeps a native automatic loading and unloading interface and can be matched with almost any robotic arm or gantry brand on the market. For line-level work, overall planning is based on your product structure, capacity requirements, site layout and process flow, with a unified control system providing process interconnection and data traceability across both new and existing equipment where interfaces allow.
Send the part that does not fit a standard machine, with material, thickness, tolerance and target output, plus your smallest and most awkward parts in the same family. Our engineering team assesses whether a tooling change, a configuration change, a part redesign or a different process is the right answer — and provides free sample parts to validate it before any order is placed.
