Should You Replace a Press Brake With a Panel Bender?

Sometimes. Not always. Here are the signals that say yes, the part types that say no, and the staged path that avoids betting a whole shop on one machine.

0.2 sPer bend on a panel bender
2.0 mmCold-rolled ceiling, above this stay on a brake
2800 mmPanel bender max forming length
    4100 mmPress brake max length

When does a panel bender actually replace a press brake?

A CNC panel bender replaces a press brake when a large share of your output is flat panels folded on all four sides, in 0.5 to 2.0 mm, under 2800 mm long, repeated many times. On those parts it clamps the blank once and folds every side without the operator lifting or rotating anything, which removes the second operator, the handling damage and most of the angle drift at the same time.

It does not replace a press brake for parts above 2.0 mm cold-rolled steel or 1.2 mm stainless, panels longer than 2800 mm, small brackets below roughly 140 × 190 mm four-sided inner size, non-four-sided geometry, or one-off prototypes where programming time exceeds bending time. Almost every factory that installs a panel bender keeps at least one press brake — the machines are complementary, and any supplier telling you otherwise is selling, not engineering.

How to tell

Eight signals that a panel bender will pay back

Count how many of these are true in your shop today. Five or more and the case is usually clear before any spreadsheet is opened. Two or fewer and you should be buying a better press brake instead.

Four-sided parts dominateMore than half your bend work
Two people per large panelLifting and turning, not bending
Panels over 1200 mmWhere handling gets expensive
Changeover over 20 minutesTool swap, gauge reset, first article
    Angle drift between shiftsOperator-dependent consistency
Scratches on coated sheetRework or scrap at full material cost
You cannot hire brake operatorsThe skill is getting scarce everywhere
You want a night shiftBut not a full night crew
    What actually drives the payback

It is rarely the cycle time

    01

Labour, not speed, is the number that moves

Everyone quotes bends per minute. In practice the saving comes from headcount: a four-sided panel that occupies two operators on a press brake occupies one on a panel bender, and none once automatic loading is fitted. Across three shifts that is the single largest line on the payback calculation.

    02

Consistency has a cost you are already paying

Press-brake angle accuracy depends on the operator, the crowning setting and how tired the shift is. A panel bender runs a closed-loop servo system with rapid compensation adjustment, holding roughly ±0.5°/m across a batch. The saving shows up as less assembly rework, not as a faster bend.

    03

Handling damage is invisible until you count it

Every manual lift on pre-painted or stainless sheet is a scrap risk, and scrap on a coated panel costs the full material and paint value. Vacuum pick-up moves the blank without touching the visible face, which is why furniture and elevator shops often justify the machine on scrap alone.

    Aanbevolen configuratie

A staged migration, not a forklift replacement

The failure mode we see most often is a factory buying one large machine, moving everything onto it, and discovering that a third of its parts do not fit the forming window. Stage it instead.

    Stage 1 — Pilot

Prove it on your three highest-volume parts
    • One panel bender sized to your largest common panel
    • Free sample parts made before the order is placed
    • Existing press brakes keep running unchanged
    • Move only the parts that clearly fit the window
    • Measure real cycle, scrap and headcount for 90 days
    Where most upgrades land

    Stage 2 — Rebalance

Punch and bend as one cell
    • Add a turret punch press so the bender is never waiting for blanks
    • Press brakes move to specials, thick parts and prototypes
    • Auxiliary blades and custom knives for your awkward profiles
    • Automatic tool change for switching between part families
    • Operators retrained as programmers rather than replaced

    Stage 3 — Unattend

Run the cell through breaks and nights
    • Truss or robotic loading with vacuum grippers
    • Automatic stacking, no operator contact with the panel
    • Fully enclosed fencing and laser guarding to EN ISO 13849-1
    • Night shift runs without a night crew
    • Optional coil-fed blanking upstream
    Read this before you commit

What a panel bender cannot do

This section exists because the most expensive mistake in this decision is discovering the limits after delivery. Check your part list against every row.

    De juiste pasvorm

Flat panels folded on all four sides, 0.5–2.0 mm, under 2800 mm, repeated across many variants. Cabinet doors, locker bodies, drawer boxes, elevator panels, rack doors and appliance panels all sit here.

    Verkeerde maat

Thick plate, very long panels, small brackets, non-four-sided geometry, prototypes, roll-formed profiles and deep-drawn parts. If most of your work looks like this, buy a better press brake instead — we sell those too.

Every factory that installs a panel bender keeps at least one press brake. The right question is not whether to keep one, but how many you can release to other work once the volume parts move across.

Both machine types are supplied with laser guarding, and safety-related control functions are specified to EN ISO 13849-1 so that an unattended cell can be signed off rather than fenced off as an afterthought.

Roll forming and deep drawing are separate processes that neither machine performs. If a meaningful share of your parts are constant-section profiles or drawn shells, that capacity comes from a different supplier and we will say so at drawing review rather than after the order.

Questions we get before an upgrade

    Veelgestelde vragen

Should we replace all of our press brakes?
No. We have never recommended it and would be suspicious of a supplier who did. A panel bender covers flat four-sided panels in 0.5–2.0 mm under 2800 mm. Thick plate, long panels, small brackets, non-four-sided geometry and prototypes stay on a press brake. The realistic outcome is that your volume parts move across and one or two brakes are released to specials and other work.
How do we calculate the payback?
The logic we use with customers is: (annual labour released + reduction in rework and scrap + additional saleable output) ÷ installed equipment cost. We deliberately do not publish a headline payback figure, because it depends on your shift pattern, local labour cost, part mix and current scrap rate — and a number built on someone else's factory is worse than no number. Send your part list and shift pattern and we build the calculation with your figures.
How much does a panel bender cost?
There is no list price, because the machine is configured to the part. Five factors move the figure most: type frame (welded costs less than cast iron but is limited to 1.5 mm cold-rolled rather than 2.0 mm), vormlengte from 1000 mm to 2800 mm, automatiseringsniveau (manual load, truss loading, or a full cell with stacking), het gereedschapspakket including auxiliary blades, custom knives and automatic tool change, and scope — a single machine, a punch-and-bend cell, or a coil-fed line. A single manual-load bender and a full line differ by roughly an order of magnitude. Send your three highest-volume parts en we sturen u binnen 24 uur een offerte op maat.
Is it really 0.2 seconds per bend?
That is STON's published bending speed, stated as three to four times faster than a press brake, with more than 5,000 bends per day per machine. Treat it as a machine capability rather than a factory output figure — real throughput depends on part size, bend count, program complexity and how the blanks arrive. For that reason we quote a cycle time programmed against your actual drawing, not a brochure number.
What happens to our press brake operators?
In most upgrades they become programmers and cell supervisors rather than being released. Panel bending is program-driven, so the scarce skill shifts from manual bend sequencing to part programming and tooling setup — which an experienced brake operator learns quickly, and which is a better use of someone who already understands springback and material behaviour.
Can we keep using our existing tooling?
No — press brake punches and dies do not transfer to a panel bender, which uses pressure knives, folding knives and optional auxiliary blades. Custom tooling is designed from your drawings and quoted with the machine. This is one reason we recommend validating with free sample parts before the order rather than after.
How long does installation and commissioning take?
Installation, commissioning and operator training are carried out by STON engineers, with video tutorials and manuals provided alongside on-site sessions. The practical constraint is usually your own production schedule rather than the machine — which is why we recommend a staged migration that leaves your existing brakes running throughout.
Can the cell be run unattended for a night shift?
Yes, with automatic loading and stacking. STON panel benders keep a native automatic loading and unloading interface and can be matched with most robotic arm and gantry brands, alongside STON's own truss system and Bronte robotic arm. Fully enclosed rear fencing and laser guarding are specified at order stage, with safety-related control functions to EN ISO 13849-1.
Welke stroom- en luchttoevoer is vereist?
Panel benders require three-phase 380 V power and 0.6 MPa compressed air. Press brakes and turret punch presses have their own requirements, supplied with the layout drawing. Voltage and frequency are configured for the destination country before shipment.
Yes — these are among STON CNC's main export markets. Supply voltage and frequency are configured to the destination before shipment, CNC and HMI language can be localised, and machines carry CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC where required. Export documentation, packing and container loading are handled in-house in Qingdao.
STON CNC commits to a one-hour response and 48-hour on-site resolution across its 80+ export markets, backed by 7×24 remote technical support, a dedicated spare parts warehouse and free software upgrades for the life of the machine. A recommended spare parts kit is quoted with the machine.
How do we start without committing to anything?
Send drawings for your three highest-volume parts and your most awkward one. Our pre-sales engineers review them, tell you honestly which belong on a panel bender and which should stay on a press brake, and provide free sample parts to validate the result before any order is placed.
