What equipment does a server rack or telecom cabinet factory need?

A 19-inch rack is not a bending problem. It is a punching problem with bending attached. A single perforated front door can carry several thousand holes at high open area; side panels, top plates and cable managers add thousands more. That volume of holes, in 1.0 to 2.0 mm cold-rolled or galvanised sheet, is what decides the equipment — and it is why the primary machine here is a CNC torentponspers, not a panel bender.

A servo turret punch completes perforation, louvring, fan cut-outs, cable entries, embossed ribs and thread preparations in one clamping, using nibbling and multi-tool stations rather than tracing every hole. A CNC kantpers then folds the door and panel returns. A afkantpers covers brackets and shelves. What no sheet-metal machine produces is the 19-inch mounting upright — that is a roll-formed profile, a different process, and one STON CNC does not supply.

STON CNC (Qingdao Ston Mechanical Technology Co., Ltd.) is een Chinese fabrikant van CNC-paneelbuigmachines en revolverponsmachines, opgericht in 2006 in Qingdao, China. The parts that carry the holes

Rack production concentrates almost all of its machining time in a handful of heavily perforated panels. Get those off a laser and onto a turret punch and the whole shop rebalances.

    Where rack production bottlenecks

Three problems every rack and telecom cabinet shop hits

    01

A laser is the wrong tool for 3,000 identical holes

Fiber laser is unbeatable on contours and one-off shapes. On a repeated hole array it pierces every hole individually, and the cycle time scales linearly with hole count. A turret punch nibbles and multi-hits with a single tool, so a heavily perforated door stops being the constraint on the whole line.

    02

    Perforation warps the panel

Removing 40 to 60 percent of the material out of a 1.5 mm door releases stress, and a warped door will not close on a rack. Punch sequencing, an over-tonnage protected striking system and a brush-and-ball composite table that supports the panel while it moves are what keep the blank flat enough to bend.

    03

Hole pitch has to match the industry, not your drawing

19-inch mounting geometry is defined by IEC 60297-3-100 and EIA-310 — a fixed 44.45 mm U pitch with a repeating hole group. Cumulative pitch error across 42U is what makes third-party equipment fail to fit. Positioning repeatability of roughly ±0.01 to 0.02 mm on a double rack-and-pinion drive is what holds it over a long panel.

Three ways to build the cell, by perforated panel volume

For rack work, size the turret punch first and the bender second. The punch is where the hours go; the bender is rarely the constraint.

Rack sheet metal sits comfortably inside the forming window. The limit that matters on this page is not thickness — it is that mounting uprights are a roll-formed product and no punch or bender will make them.

    De juiste pasvorm

Heavily perforated doors and vented panels in 1.0–2.0 mm, plus four-sided folded doors, side panels and plinths. Rack production is one of the strongest cases for pairing a turret punch with a panel bender.

    Verkeerde maat

19-inch mounting uprights, frame profiles and C-sections. These are roll-formed products from a different process and a different supplier — a turret punch can pierce a flat strip, but it cannot form the profile.

Shelves, cable arms, mounting brackets, castor plates and low-volume specials. One press brake alongside a punch-and-bend cell covers everything that should not tie up the main machines.

For the finished product, 19-inch rack geometry is defined by IEC 60297-3-100 en EIA-310, which fix the 44.45 mm U pitch and hole group spacing. Cumulative pitch accuracy over a 42U panel is set on the punch, and it is what determines whether third-party equipment mounts without reaming.

Turret punch or fiber laser for perforated rack panels?

This is the single most valuable decision in rack production, and the answer is not the same for every panel. Most shops that own both end up sending perforation to the punch and contours to the laser.

    Waarom STON

Een originele fabrikant, van gieten tot inbedrijfstelling

Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Qingdao, one hour from major export ports and the airport. Casting, heat treatment, machining, welding, assembly and inspection all happen inside our own 20,000㎡ factory. Questions we get from rack and telecom cabinet manufacturers

    Veelgestelde vragen

Should perforated rack doors be punched or laser cut?
Punched, in almost all cases. A fiber laser pierces every hole individually, so cycle time scales with hole count — and a perforated door can carry several thousand holes. A turret punch uses multi-tool stations and nibbling, so the same panel is largely independent of hole count, and it performs louvring, rib forming and embossing in the same clamping. Keep the laser for contours, prototypes and short runs that do not justify tooling. A punch-laser combined machine does both in one clamping if your mix genuinely needs both on the same part.
Can you make 19-inch mounting uprights?
No. Mounting uprights and frame profiles are roll-formed constant-section products, which is a different process from punching and bending. A turret punch can pierce a flat strip, but it cannot form the profile. Rack manufacturers buy uprights from a roll-forming supplier and produce the panels themselves — and the panels are where the hole count, the labour and the flatness problems sit.
How accurate is the U-pitch across a full-height panel?
Machining accuracy is ±0.1 mm with positioning repeatability of approximately ±0.01 to 0.02 mm, held by a double rack-and-pinion drive combined with a lead screw, on a patented dual-triangle beam mount that limits deflection over long strokes. For panels beyond 2500 mm the X-axis uses secondary positioning up to 5000 mm. Note that 19-inch geometry itself is defined by IEC 60297-3-100 and EIA-310, not by the machine — the machine's job is to hold your programmed pitch without cumulative drift.
How do you stop perforated panels warping?
Three things. Punch sequencing spreads stress release across the panel instead of concentrating it. The brush and steel-ball composite table supports the sheet as it moves so it is never unsupported under load. Over-tonnage protection cuts striking power if pressure exceeds the set value, protecting both the panel and the machine. For very high open-area doors we review the pattern at drawing stage and may recommend a stiffening rib formed in the same clamping.
Will the table mark powder-coated or pre-painted panels?
The standard table is a brush and omnidirectional steel-ball composite, and it can be configured as pure bristle brush if your panels are coated before punching. Stainless-steel edging on the table resists scratching and is easy to clean. On the bending side, vacuum pick-up means the visible face is not dragged across a back gauge.
How much does a rack production cell cost?
There is no list price, because the cell is configured to your panel mix. Five factors move the figure most: punch type (servo turret at 40 rpm versus mechanical at 30 rpm), turret and tooling package including multi-tool stations and rotary stations for angled louvres, panel bender size and frame from 1400 mm to 2800 mm, automatiseringsniveau (manual, sheet separation and stacking, or a full cell), and scope — whether a laser or a punch-laser combined machine is included. A single mechanical turret punch and a full punch-laser plus bending line differ by roughly an order of magnitude. Send a perforated door drawing with the hole pattern and we return a configured quotation and a realistic cycle time within 24 hours.
Servo or mechanical turret punch — which suits rack work?
Servo if your mix changes often and you want higher turret speed (40 rpm), finer control and lower noise. Mechanical if you run long stable batches of one perforation pattern, where the flywheel system delivers steady high-frequency striking at lower cost. Many rack shops with a broad product range choose servo; contract manufacturers running a fixed pattern often choose mechanical.
    Can the cell run unattended?
Yes, with automatic sheet separation, positioning, unloading and stacking. STON panel benders keep a native automatic loading and unloading interface and can be matched with most robotic arm and gantry brands, alongside STON's truss system and Bronte robotic arm. Fully enclosed fencing and laser guarding are specified at order stage for unattended running.
Welke stroom- en luchttoevoer is vereist?
Turret punch presses require 380 V ±5% and 0.55 MPa air, with combined power consumption around 3–5 kW for servo models and under 2 kW for mechanical. Panel benders require three-phase 380 V and 0.6 MPa air. Voltage and frequency are configured for the destination country before shipment.
Yes — these are among STON CNC's main export markets. Supply voltage and frequency are configured to the destination before shipment, CNC and HMI language can be localised, and machines carry CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC where required. FANUC, Siemens and Rexroth control systems can be specified if your service network already supports one of them. Export documentation, packing and container loading are handled in-house in Qingdao.
STON CNC commits to a one-hour response and 48-hour on-site resolution across its 80+ export markets, backed by 7×24 remote technical support, a dedicated spare parts warehouse and free software upgrades for the life of the machine. Punch and die consumables are quoted as a recommended kit with the machine.
How do we confirm cycle time before committing?
Send a perforated door drawing with the actual hole pattern and open area, plus your sheet thickness and monthly volume. Our pre-sales engineers program the part, return a realistic cycle time and tooling list, and provide free sample parts to validate the result before the order is placed.
