Which machines does an electrical cabinet factory actually need?

An electrical cabinet is a set of flat sheet-metal parts, each carrying many holes and each folded on all four sides. That shape decides the equipment. Blanks are cut on a fiberlaser or punched on a CNC torentponspers — which also produces louvres, cable entries, embossed ribs and threading preparations in the same clamping. The blanks then go to a CNC kantpers, which folds all four sides without the operator lifting or turning the panel. A afkantpers stays in the shop for brackets, DIN rails supports and anything thicker than 2 mm.

STON CNC (Qingdao Ston Mechanical Technology Co., Ltd.) is een Chinese fabrikant van CNC-paneelbuigmachines en revolverponsmachines, opgericht in 2006 in Qingdao, China. STON CNC manufactures all four machine types listed above in a 20,000㎡ in-house factory and integrates them into a single line with shared control, automatic loading and stacking. Machines carry ISO 9001 quality certification and CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and are exported to more than 80 countries. View certifications and patents →

Every panel in a standard enclosure, on one line

Roughly 80% of the sheet-metal content of a typical wall-mount or floor-standing cabinet is four-sided folded panels between 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm. That is exactly the window a panel bender is built for.

    Where cabinet production loses money

Three problems every enclosure factory runs into

    01

Holes come before bends — and there are hundreds

Mounting plates and ventilated doors carry hole patterns that take a long time on a laser and cost tooling time on a press. A CNC turret punch press completes punching, louvring, embossing and rib forming in a single clamping, then hands a finished blank straight to bending.

    02

Four-sided panels need two people and a lot of turning

On a press brake, a 2 m door skin is lifted and rotated four times. Two operators, four handling steps, four chances to scratch a painted-grade surface. A panel bender clamps the blank once and folds all four sides in sequence.

    03

Every order is a different cabinet size

Enclosure work is high-mix by nature. Press-brake changeover — tool swap, back-gauge reset, first-article check — quietly eats a shift. Program recall and rapid compensation adjustment bring changeover down to minutes instead of shim-and-retry.

    Aanbevolen configuratie

Three ways to build the cell, by output

Pick by your current monthly output and the number of cabinet variants, not by budget alone. An oversized line on low mix is the most common mistake in this industry.

Four-sided folded panels, 0.5–2.0 mm, up to 2800 mm long, repeated across many cabinet variants. This is where a panel bender pays back fastest.

Zorg dat je een kantpers bij de hand hebt

Brackets, gland plate returns, one-off prototypes and small parts under the minimum forming size. A panel bender complements a press brake, it does not fully replace one.

Safety and compliance standards these machines are built to

Guarding and control-system design follow the recognised machinery safety framework rather than in-house rules. Risk assessment is carried out to EN ISO 12100; veiligheidsgerelateerde besturingsfuncties, zoals het onderbreken van een lichtgordijn en een noodstop, zijn gespecificeerd om EN ISO 13849-1. Press brakes supplied into the EU are built against EN 12622 for hydraulic press brakes, and machines placed on the EU market carry CE marking under Machinerichtlijn 2006/42/EG samen met het bijbehorende technische dossier. Het kwaliteitsmanagement is gecertificeerd volgens ISO 9001, and dimensional tolerances on machined structural parts follow ISO 2768.

On the machines themselves this means fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on all protruding moving parts, laser guarding that halts the ram when the protected zone is broken, over-tonnage protection on turret punch presses, and grating-ruler offset-load detection on panel benders.

    Het proces kiezen

Panel bender, press brake or roll forming?

Most enclosure factories need two of these three, not one. The question is which parts go where — and it is decided by part geometry, not by machine price.

If your cabinet range is built mainly from roll-formed frame profiles with panels bolted on, a panel bender still covers the panels — but the frame line is a separate investment from a different supplier, and we will tell you that at the drawing-review stage rather than after the order.

    Waarom STON

Een originele fabrikant, van gieten tot inbedrijfstelling

Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Qingdao, one hour from major export ports and the airport. Every stage — casting, heat treatment, machining, welding, assembly and inspection — happens inside our own 20,000㎡ factory. That is why configuration changes for a cabinet line do not become a six-month subcontracting problem.

Vicky Xu Hoofd Internationale Verkoop, STON CNC

Ten years working with sheet-metal manufacturers across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South America. Rather than quoting a machine from a catalogue, Vicky starts from your part drawings, material and thickness range and target output, then works with STON's engineering team to define the configuration — a single panel bender, a turret punch press, or a fully integrated cutting, punching and bending line with automated loading.

Questions we get from cabinet factories

    Veelgestelde vragen

Can a panel bender bend 2 mm cold-rolled steel for cabinet bodies?
Yes, with a cast-iron frame model. STON cast-frame panel benders are rated to 2.0 mm cold-rolled steel and 1.2 mm stainless steel at full bend length. Welded-frame models are rated to 1.5 mm cold-rolled and 1.0 mm stainless. Above 2.0 mm cold-rolled, a press brake is the correct machine and we will say so.
What is the smallest electrical cabinet part a panel bender can form?
The minimum inner dimension for four-sided forming is approximately 140 × 190 mm and the minimum bending height is 5 mm. Smaller brackets and clips normally stay on a press brake, or need a small-part customisation with modified clamping and tooling.
Do I need a turret punch press as well as a panel bender?
For electrical cabinets, usually yes. Cabinet parts carry large numbers of mounting holes, louvres, cable entries and embossments. A CNC turret punch press completes punching, louvring and rib forming in one clamping, then the panel bender forms the four sides. Running both means the bender is never waiting for blanks — which is where most single-machine investments disappoint.
How much faster is a panel bender than a press brake for cabinet doors?
STON publishes a bending speed of 0.2 seconds per bend, stated as three to four times faster than a press brake, with more than 5,000 bends per day per machine. In practice the larger saving is labour: a four-sided door skin that needs two operators on a press brake is handled by one on a panel bender, or by none when automatic loading is fitted.
Can STON machines connect to robots or loading systems we already own?
Yes. STON panel benders keep a native automatic loading and unloading interface and can be matched with most robotic arm and gantry brands on the market, alongside STON's own truss system and Bronte robotic arm.
Welke stroom- en luchttoevoer is vereist?
Panel benders require three-phase 380 V and 0.6 MPa compressed air. Turret punch presses require 380 V ±5% and 0.55 MPa air, with combined power consumption around 3–5 kW for servo models. Voltage and frequency are configured for the destination country before shipment.
Levert u CE-documentatie voor export naar Europa?
STON machines are CE certified and the company holds ISO quality certification. Technical documentation for the Machinery Directive is prepared with each EU shipment, and safety configuration — laser guarding, fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on moving parts — is specified at order stage.
How do I confirm my cabinet parts can be made before committing?
Send part drawings with material, thickness and target output. Our pre-sales engineers review the drawings and provide free sample parts to validate feasibility, optimise the bend program and tooling, and shorten ramp-up after installation.
What are the payment and delivery terms?
T/T with 30% prepayment and 70% before the equipment leaves the factory, or an irrevocable L/C at sight from your partner bank. Mainstream settlement currencies including USD and EUR are supported. Packing and container loading are handled in-house.
How much does a panel bender for electrical cabinet production cost?
There is no single list price, because the machine is configured to the part. Five factors move the figure more than anything else:
    • Frame type — a welded frame costs less than cast iron, but is limited to 1.5 mm cold-rolled instead of 2.0 mm
    • Forming length — from 1000 mm (model A) up to 2800 mm (model D+)
    • Automatisering — manual loading, truss loading or full robotic cell
    • Tooling package — auxiliary blades, custom knives, automatic tool change
    • Scope — a single bender, a punch-and-bend cell, or a full coil-to-part line
A single manual-load panel bender and a complete coil-to-part line differ by roughly an order of magnitude. Send your part drawings and target output and we return a configured quotation within 24 hours — with the alternative configurations priced alongside, so you can see what each option actually buys.
Panel bender, press brake or roll forming — which suits electrical cabinet parts?
Panel bender for flat panels folded on all four sides in 0.5–2.0 mm, which covers most doors, mounting plates and side panels. Press brake for anything above 2.0 mm cold-rolled, panels longer than 2800 mm, small brackets below the minimum forming size, and prototypes. Roll forming for constant-section profiles such as 19″ rack uprights and frame members — a different process that a panel bender cannot perform, and one STON does not supply. Most cabinet factories run a panel bender and a press brake together and buy roll-formed profiles in.
Kunnen de machines geleverd worden aan Turkije, Mexico, Rusland of Zuidoost-Azië?
Yes — these are among STON CNC's main export markets. Supply voltage and frequency are configured to the destination before shipment, CNC and HMI language can be localised, and machines carry CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC where required. Export documentation, packing and container loading are handled in-house in Qingdao, one hour from major export ports and the airport.
Hoe worden reserveonderdelen en service afgehandeld buiten China?
STON CNC commits to a one-hour response and 48-hour on-site resolution across its 80+ export markets, backed by 7×24 remote technical support, a dedicated spare parts warehouse and free software upgrades for the life of the machine. A recommended spare parts kit is quoted with the machine so common wear items sit on your own shelf instead of being air-freighted mid-shift.
