    Unmanned Loading and Unloading Cells

Robot, truss or gantry — three ways to take the operator out of the handling loop, and a clear account of the problems automation will not solve for you.

When does automating loading and unloading actually pay?

Automation on a bending or punching machine pays back through three mechanisms, and it is worth knowing which one applies to you before choosing hardware. The first is labour: a large panel that occupies two operators becomes a cell that occupies none. The second is surface scrap: on coated, filmed or stainless sheet, every manual lift is a damage risk, and vacuum pick-up removes contact with the visible face entirely. The third is time: a cell that keeps running through breaks, shift changes and a night shift adds hours no faster machine can add.

Three handling architectures cover almost every case. A 로봇 팔 suits varied part shapes and multi-machine cells. A truss system suits large flat panels moving between fixed stations. A gantry suits long straight transfers and heavy loads. STON panel benders keep a native automatic loading and unloading interface, so they can be matched with STON's own truss and Bronte robotic arm systems or with most robot brands already in your plant.

STON CNC (Qingdao Ston Mechanical Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese original manufacturer of CNC panel benders and turret punch presses, founded in 2006 in Qingdao, China. All equipment described here is built inside STON CNC's own 20,000㎡ factory, from casting and heat treatment through machining, assembly and inspection. Machines carry ISO 9001 quality certification and CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and are exported to more than 80 countries.

    How to tell

Eight signals a cell is ready to be automated

Automation rewards a stable process. If the cell is still unstable, automating it makes the instability faster rather than fixing it. Count how many of these are true today.

Two people move one panelHandling labour, not forming labour
Panels over 1200 mmWhere manual handling gets expensive
Coated or filmed surfacesEvery touch is a scrap risk
You want a third shiftBut cannot staff one
Blank supply is stableAutomation needs consistent input
Part family has settledPrograms stop changing weekly
Operators are hard to hireThe skill shortage is structural
Machine waits for peopleNot the other way round
What automation does and does not fix

Three honest observations before you automate

    01

Automation amplifies whatever the cell already does

A cell producing inconsistent blanks will produce them faster and stack them neatly. Every successful automation project we have supplied was preceded by a stable process: consistent blank dimensions, settled programs and a part family that is no longer changing weekly. If that is not true yet, fix it first — it costs nothing and it is the difference between a working cell and an expensive conveyor.

    02

The gripper is the project, not the robot

Most automation difficulties are handling difficulties: how a thin blank is separated from a stack, how a filmed panel is held without slipping, how a formed part is set down without marking. The patented 360° rotating suction feeder exists for exactly this reason, and gripper design is where our engineering time actually goes on a cell project.

    03

Safety design decides whether it can run unattended

A fenced cell that still needs a person inside it is not unmanned. Guarding is designed to EN ISO 12100 risk assessment with safety-related control functions to EN ISO 13849-1, so that interlocks, light curtains and emergency stops are rated for the mode you actually intend to run — not added afterwards to satisfy an inspector.

    Recommended configuration

Three levels of automation, by how far you want to go

Most factories should not jump to the last one. Each level is a working configuration in its own right, and each is a sensible place to stop.

    Assisted loading

    Removing the two-person lift
    • Vacuum-assisted manipulator or single-axis loader
    • One operator instead of two on large panels
    • Immediate reduction in surface damage
    • No change to programming or scheduling
    • Lowest capital, fastest to install
    Where most projects land

    Automatic cell

One machine, loading and unloading closed
    • Truss or robotic arm with vacuum gripper
    • Automatic sheet separation, positioning and stacking
    • Operator supervises rather than handles
    • Fully enclosed fencing and laser guarding
    • Runs through breaks and shift changes
    • Native interface, compatible with most robot brands

    Lights-out cell

Unattended running across a full shift
    • Multi-machine handling between punch and bender
    • Buffered blank supply for a full unattended shift
    • Automatic stacking and interleaving of finished parts
    • Condition monitoring and remote diagnostics
    • Safety functions specified for unattended mode
    • Optional integration with a coil-fed blanking line
    Read this before you automate

What each handling architecture actually suits

Choosing the wrong architecture is the most expensive mistake in an automation project, because it is not something a controls change can fix later.

    Right fit

Stable part families, consistent blanks, panels large or delicate enough that handling is a real cost, and a genuine need for hours the current shift pattern cannot supply.

    Wrong fit

Unstable processes, blanks that vary dimensionally, part families still changing weekly, and shops hoping automation will substitute for programming capability. It will not, and the cell will idle.

    Keep a press brake

Keep at least one manually loaded machine. Prototypes, first articles and urgent one-offs should never have to interrupt an automated cell — that interruption is where automated cells lose their utilisation.

Standards this equipment is built and guarded to

Risk assessment follows EN ISO 12100; safety-related control functions such as light-curtain interruption and emergency stop are specified to EN ISO 13849-1. Hydraulic press brakes supplied into the EU are built against EN 12622. Machines placed on the EU market carry CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC with the accompanying technical file. Quality management is certified to ISO 9001, and machined structural tolerances follow ISO 2768. Where an industrial robot is integrated, ISO 10218-2 applies to the robot system installation alongside the machine's own guarding. Cell safety is assessed as a whole rather than machine by machine, which is why the guarding layout is drawn at the same time as the material flow rather than after it.

On the machines this means fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on all protruding moving parts, laser guarding that halts motion when the protected zone is broken, over-tonnage protection on turret punch presses, and grating-ruler offset-load detection on panel benders.

    Choosing the process

Automate, add a shift, or add a machine?

Automation competes with two cheaper options that are often the correct answer. This is the comparison we work through before proposing hardware.

Automate the cellAdd a shiftAdd a second machine
Adds capacityYes, on the same machineYesYes
    Ongoing labour costLowestHighestDoubles operator requirement
    Capital requiredModerateNoneHighest

    Reduces surface scrapYesNoNo
Handles a mixed part rangeNeeds stable familiesYesYes
Best whenStable families, hiring is hard, surfaces are delicateDemand is temporary or uncertainTwo jobs genuinely need to run in parallel

If your demand increase is a single large order rather than a structural change, a shift is almost always the cheaper answer. We would rather say that than sell a cell that is idle in nine months.

    What changes

Manual handling versus an automated cell

Figures below describe the direction and mechanism of the change. Actual results depend on your part mix, batch size and shift pattern — we model them against your own drawings before quoting.

Payback logic we use with customers: (annual labour released + reduction in rework and scrap + additional saleable output) ÷ installed equipment cost. We build this with your real numbers rather than publishing a headline figure that would not match your plant.

Questions we get about automation projects

    Frequently asked questions

The gripper, almost always. Separating a single thin blank from a stack, holding a filmed or oiled panel without slipping, and setting a formed part down without marking it are where the engineering time goes. This is why the patented 360° rotating suction feeder exists and why we test gripper design against your actual parts rather than a specification sheet.
Can the cell really run with nobody present?
Yes, provided the guarding is designed for that mode from the start. Risk assessment follows EN ISO 12100 and safety-related control functions are specified to EN ISO 13849-1, with ISO 10218-2 applying where an industrial robot is integrated. Fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on moving parts and laser guarding are configured at order stage. Guarding added afterwards to satisfy an inspection usually ends up restricting the very mode you bought the cell for.
What if our part mix keeps changing?
Then automate later, not now. Automation rewards a stable part family with consistent blanks. If programs change weekly and blank dimensions drift, an automated cell will produce the inconsistency faster and stack it tidily. The honest sequence is to stabilise the process, then automate the families that have settled — and to keep at least one manually loaded machine for prototypes and urgent one-offs so they never interrupt the cell.
How much does an automated cell cost?
There is no list price, because a cell is designed around your parts. Five factors move the figure most: handling architecture (assisted manipulator, truss, robotic arm or gantry), number of machines served by one system, gripper complexity for your material, surface and stacking behaviour, buffer capacity for how long the cell must run unattended, and safety scope including fencing, interlocks and light curtains. Assisted loading and a lights-out multi-machine cell differ by a wide margin. Send your part drawings and current cell layout and we return a scoped proposal within 24 hours.
Should we automate or just add a shift?
If your demand increase is temporary or driven by one large order, add a shift — it needs no capital and can be reversed. Automate when the change is structural: when hiring is genuinely hard, when surface scrap on coated material is significant, or when the panels are large enough that handling is a two-person job on every part. We work through this comparison before proposing hardware, and sometimes the answer is that you do not need us yet.
What power and air supply is required?
Can the machines be supplied to Turkey, Mexico, Russia or Southeast Asia?
How are spare parts and service handled outside China?
