    What equipment does an AHU or air purification manufacturer need?

    An air handling unit is a sealed box assembled from folded panels, and its performance is measured by how well that box holds air. Casing panels, access doors, blank-off plates and filter frames are typically 0.6 to 1.2 mm galvanised or stainless sheet, and their flatness and edge geometry determine the casing air leakage class far more than the gasket specification does.

    The equipment set follows from that. A flexible edge folding machine produces the dead edges, offsets and returns that give a panel its rigidity and its sealing face. A CNC turret punch press produces filter fixing patterns, fan and coil access cut-outs, acoustic perforation for inner skins and stiffening ribs in one clamping. A panel bender handles deeper four-sided panels and access doors. What none of these produce is rectangular ductwork — duct lines with integral TDF flange forming are a separate machine category that STON CNC does not supply, and we say so before quoting rather than after.

    AHU and purification equipment concentrate their sheet metal in flat panels whose edges have to seal against each other. Edge geometry, not panel size, is the manufacturing problem.

    Three problems specific to air handling panels

    Leakage class is decided at the fold, not at the gasket

    A casing panel that bows will not seal against its neighbour, and the leakage test fails whatever gasket is specified. Straightness of roughly 0.2 mm per metre and angle accuracy of roughly ±0.5° per metre across the panel are what make even gasket compression possible along the whole joint.

    Double-skin panels need edge geometry a press brake struggles with

    Casing panels commonly require a hemmed dead edge, an offset for the inner skin, or a return that closes onto the insulation. These are the three special processes a flexible edge folding machine performs directly, with a minimum folded height of 4 mm, and which a press brake produces only with multiple setups.

    Acoustic perforation is punch work, not laser work

    An attenuator inner skin can carry thousands of holes. A laser pierces each one, so cycle time scales with hole count and the acoustic panel becomes the constraint. A turret punch multi-hits and nibbles the pattern with standard tooling and adds rib forming in the same clamping.

    Right fit

    Flat casing panels, access doors, filter frames and cleanroom panels in 0.6–1.2 mm with hemmed, offset or returned edges, plus acoustic perforation. This is the core of AHU and purification sheet metal.

    Wrong fit

    Rectangular duct production lines with integral flange forming, spiral round duct machines, circular flange rolling, and extruded or roll-formed casing frame profiles. All separate machine categories that STON does not supply.

    Keep a press brake

    Structural base frames, heavy lifting brackets, damper shafts and thicker mounting plates. One press brake alongside the panel cell covers all of it.

    Standards this equipment is built and guarded to

    Risk assessment follows EN ISO 12100; safety-related control functions such as light-curtain interruption and emergency stop are specified to EN ISO 13849-1. Hydraulic press brakes supplied into the EU are built against EN 12622. Machines placed on the EU market carry CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC with the accompanying technical file. Quality management is certified to ISO 9001, and machined structural tolerances follow ISO 2768. For the finished unit, EN 1886 defines casing strength, air leakage, filter bypass leakage and thermal performance classes, and ISO 14644-1 applies to cleanroom classification. These test your assembled unit rather than the machine — what the equipment contributes is the panel flatness and edge consistency those classes depend on.

    On the machines this means fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on all protruding moving parts, laser guarding that halts motion when the protected zone is broken, over-tonnage protection on turret punch presses, and grating-ruler offset-load detection on panel benders.

    Folding machine, panel bender or press brake for casing panels?

    Most AHU factories need the folding machine first. The choice between the three is decided by edge geometry and panel depth, not by panel size.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can you supply a rectangular duct production line?
    No. Duct lines with integral TDF or TDC flange forming, spiral round duct machines and circular flange rolling are separate machine categories that STON CNC does not manufacture. What we equip is the unit casing and equipment panel side — casing panels, access doors, filter frames, acoustic skins and cleanroom panels. If ductwork is the larger part of your business, we will say so on the first call.
    How does the equipment affect our EN 1886 leakage class?
    EN 1886 tests your assembled unit, not the machine. What forming contributes is panel flatness and edge consistency: straightness of approximately 0.2 mm per metre and angle accuracy of approximately ±0.5° per metre mean gasket compression is even along the whole joint. Most casing leakage failures we see traced back originate at bowed panels or inconsistent returns rather than at the gasket itself.
    Can it produce double-skin panel edge returns?
    Yes. A flexible edge folding machine performs dead edge (hemming), offset and arc bending alongside positive and negative bending, with a minimum folded height of 4 mm. These are exactly the operations a double-skin casing edge requires, and they are single operations on a folding machine where a press brake needs several setups.
    Should acoustic perforation be punched or laser cut?
    Punched. An attenuator inner skin can carry thousands of holes, and a laser pierces each one individually so cycle time scales with hole count. A turret punch multi-hits and nibbles the pattern with standard tooling, and adds stiffening ribs in the same clamping. Keep the laser for access apertures, coil openings and unit-specific one-offs.
    Can it handle stainless steel for pharmaceutical or food AHUs?
    Within the stainless window: a cast-iron frame panel bender is rated to 1.2 mm stainless at full bend length, a welded frame to 1.0 mm. Most hygienic AHU casings sit at 0.8–1.2 mm, which is inside that. Above 1.2 mm at full length, the part belongs on a press brake and we will identify those from your drawings before quoting.
    How much does an AHU panel cell cost?
    There is no list price, because the cell is configured to your unit range. Five factors move the figure most: folding machine size from 1200 to 2000 mm, whether a turret punch is included for acoustic perforation and access cut-outs, whether a panel bender is added for access doors and deeper panels, automation level (manual, automatic loading, or full stacking), and the custom tooling package for your double-skin edge profile. A folding machine alone and a full punch-and-fold cell differ by roughly an order of magnitude. Send a casing panel section drawing and we return a configured quotation within 24 hours.
    We also make cleanroom wall panels. Same cell?
    Usually yes. Cleanroom wall and ceiling panels share the casing panel profile: flat faces, folded returns, flush joints and a cleanable surface. The difference is finish handling rather than forming — suction feeding and film retention matter more, because a cleanroom panel with a handling mark is rejected on appearance. ISO 14644-1 applies to the installed room, not to the forming process.
    What power and air supply is required?
    Panel benders and folding machines require three-phase 380 V power and 0.6 MPa compressed air. Turret punch presses require 380 V ±5% and 0.55 MPa air, with combined power consumption around 3–5 kW for servo models. Fiber laser units require three-phase 380 V, with recommended supply capacity depending on laser power. Voltage and frequency are configured for the destination country before shipment.
    Can the machines be supplied to Turkey, Mexico, Russia or Southeast Asia?
    Yes — these are among STON CNC's main export markets. Supply voltage and frequency are configured to the destination before shipment, CNC and HMI language can be localised, and machines carry CE marking under Directive 2006/42/EC where required. FANUC, Siemens and Rexroth control systems can be specified if your local service network already supports one. Export documentation, packing and container loading are handled in-house in Qingdao, one hour from major export ports and the airport.
    How are spare parts and service handled outside China?
    STON CNC commits to a one-hour response and 48-hour on-site resolution across its 80+ export markets, backed by 7×24 remote technical support, a dedicated spare parts warehouse and free software upgrades for the life of the machine. A recommended spare parts kit is quoted with the machine so common wear items sit on your own shelf rather than being air-freighted mid-shift.
    Do you supply CE documentation for export to Europe?
    STON machines are CE certified and the company holds ISO quality certification. Technical documentation for Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is prepared with each EU shipment, with risk assessment to EN ISO 12100 and safety-related control functions to EN ISO 13849-1. Guarding configuration — laser protection, fully enclosed fencing, covers on moving parts — is specified at order stage rather than added afterwards.
    How do we confirm this before committing?
    Send a casing panel section drawing showing the double-skin edge detail, an acoustic panel with the real perforation pattern, and your largest panel size. Those three define the cell. Our engineers review them and provide free sample parts to validate the edge geometry before any order is placed.
